I didn't do that, unfortunately. In the military I was given the wrong type of earplugs to protect my hearing. Working on a jackhammer for several years, I was given no hearing protection, at all.
So today I suffer from fairly profound high frequency hearing loss. I also have suffered with tinnitus for the past 20-30 years. Unrelenting ringing in my ears.
